Life after five: What’s next at Matthews Yard

After the unfortunate departure of Hoodoo’s we have taken the opportunity to review our operating model and implement some important changes to improve the Matthews Yard experience for everyone.

At the end of last year our shareholders approved our takeover of The Exchange Workspace, next door to Matthews Yard. The combined premises will give us more than 10,000 sq ft of space dedicated to supporting the needs of a diverse range of Croydon’s creative community. Our unique combination of art gallery, theatre, coworking and private suites are served with quality food from two concessions who between them open 7 days a week.  With the workspace comes 1Gb fibre internet which is being rolled out in the theatre, restaurant, and lounge over the Summer of 2017. This will give us rock solid wifi, while opening up a world of live streaming capabilities.

In February we launched Croydon Creative Month a new celebration of Croydon’s creative community. The series of events at venues across Croydon offers a range of free classes, courses and workshops aimed creative businesses and entrepreneurs. The pilot which ran in February 2017 was hugely successful given the fast turn around and limited resources. More than 100 people attended more than a dozen events at 8 venues in Croydon. Charcoal drawing, life drawing, Q&As, drop ins and marketing workshops were amongst the activities delivered. Croydon Creative Month will be back next year, if you want to get involved drop us a line using this form.

Bobski has recently opened his own restaurant in the workspace, selling out every day, his combination of friendly and personal service backed up by top quality home cooked food with a strong Caribbean vibe is a runaway success. With permissions to be granted for Bobski to place some tables and chairs in the square, we come a step closer to bringing Exchange square to life.

This month Brgr&Beer extended their opening hours and will soon be serving a range of hot drinks and a larger selection of beer.  With food and drink taken care of, Matthews Yard can spend more time improving our cultural and creative offer.

We are working on some exciting changes with Jamal and Theatre Utopia in the Summer. We will be working closer than ever before to improve our theatre offering, while developing a diverse arts and cultural programme.

You can expect more updates from the MY family in the weeks and months ahead. In the meantime, thank you for your support.
