May 28, 2016.8:00 am-July 16, 2016.11:00 pm
Monica, also known as monjii, was born in Tooting grew up in Croydon. Born to Italian parents, she has a zest for life and a great passion for food & art. Her father charmed her into photography from an early age & she became enchanted.
However, in 2002 Monica’s interests were challenged when she lost the central sight in her left eye. Most of her vision was restored but with the fear of going blind still terrifying, she decided to do something constructive & began studying photography. During this time she developed a love for fine art photography and began experimenting with different techniques both in camera and in her digital darkroom. Monjii sees the mystery within an image, bringing it out & evoking a certain mood. Her creativity is boundless.
In 2003 Monica embarked on a 9 year course studying photography passing with distinctions which helped put her on the map as an artist and develop her passion.
Monica draws inspiration from her life “Death is also a great inspiration, it reaches the very bottom of my being and scrapes out your insides leaving raw emotions that stir creativity”
Artist Rankin inspires Monica not only from a photographic point of view but also his business head . He pushes boundaries and sets trends and keeps his work interesting which Monica strives to accomplish and develop with her work while exorcising her mind’s contents.
“ If I don’t’ empty my head it gets very crowded in there”
Creating art, upcycling or writing poetry helps Monica to quiet her mind and often her motivation behind pieces are getting a sudden, inspired concept out and starting the creative process!
“The Romans believed that art came from beings called muses that lived in the walls. They were said to jump out of the walls and into people, inspire them with an idea and then jump back into the walls. I love that idea. Sometimes it does feel like you’ve been hit by something, but as quick as the ideas come they can be gone just as fast”
If you could share one message through your art, what would it be?
“Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Live outside the box, in fact, live in a circle or
a triangle or a spaceship in your garden! As far as we know we have one shot at this, one chance to live it, breath it, feel it and thrive! Express yourself and don’t worry what others think of you. I once read a great quote”Concentrate on making your images remarkable, instead of marketable. If you photograph what you love without regard for money, you’ll create better images, which could lead to the possibility of money, just don’t count on the money”
