We are excited for the year ahead and delighted to be shifting focus from survival to expansion by increasing our capacity to support local creatives. We start 2017 with the formal takeover of the Exchange Workspace, giving us more than 12,000 sq ft dedicated to nurturing creative and artistic talent in Croydon. We are borrowing 30k towards the costs of completing refurbishment work.
We started the year with a full complement of concessions operating out of Matthews Yard. New additions Hoodoo’s Coffee & Eats and Theatre Utopia were finding their feet and building on the solid work of Brgr&Beer, Hoodoo’s Live Room and the Descart.es gallery in continuing to place Matthews Yard at the forefront of not only Croydon’s arts, cultural and food scene, but also it’s regeneration. A steady flow of awards and recognition in local and national press are testimony to the outstanding work being done by Matthews Yard and by each of the businesses operating within it.

On Saturday 20th August 2016 Matthews Yard launched its latest #crowdfunding drive. MYnd the Gap. For many, it will seem to come out of the blue. Matthews Yard is the busiest it has ever been. We have more events, more visitors and more pounds spent in the premises than ever before. Why then, are we turning to crowdfunding to survive once again?
An open letter to those “developing” Croydon
I didn’t go to the Develop Croydon Conference which was held last Thursday. It’s not that I wasn’t invited, I was. But, like so many other residents, I couldn’t afford the £350 + VAT to attend and discover what great plans are in store for our town centre.
Those of you who have kept up with progress will know our business model and our premises have undergone a huge transformation over the past 9 months. I am confident most of you will agree that it has been for the better.
Our new business model has enabled a flurry of new businesses to spring up in the heart of Croydon. [Read more…]
We are really pleased to announce that we were recently chosen as one of six London venues shortlisted for a prestigious new “Independent Cultural Venue of the Year” award as part of the Dot London Small Business Awards. We are competing against some amazing venues including Arts Depot in Finchley, Arebyte in Hackney and St John’s Smith Square, in Westminster.
Its been two months since we publicly announced the very real threat of Matthews Yard going out of business. We have worked tirelessly to try and improve our financial position by restructuring debt, attracting inward investment and increasing revenue under a new business model which carries less risk and has lower operating costs. Its been a tough ride with lots of hurdles. It now looks like the final fence is all that stands between us and the home straight.

There is no simple solution to saving Matthews Yard and in the interests of transparency I wanted to write this blog post to demonstrate what we have done so far, what we are doing now and what we will do differently in the future. I also thought it would help explain why we are in the financial position we are in now, forced to turn to the community once again for help. [Read more…]
