Croydon Creative Month is a new initiative from Matthews Yard which aims to showcase all that Croydon has to offer in the creative industries. Throughout February we aim to work with numerous individuals and organisations across Croydon to plan, organise and host events aimed at showcasing and supporting creative opportunities in Croydon at venues across the borough.
The events are being scheduled in several formats, combining intimacy and one on one experiences with social events and group activities, so that those creatives who like a little more tranquility can still gain access to information and advice.
Our Open House events confirmed so far include Tmrw Hub, Turf Projects, The Exchange Workspace, Hoodoo’s Venue, Croydon Conference Centre and Project B. We expect to add dozens more in the next 3 weeks. The open house events give creative spaces the opportunity to showcase their facilities to creatives interested in using them.
Our creative Q&As take place for an hour and include a 10-15 minute informal introduction from the creative, followed by a series of questions from the floor.
So far we have Jack Oughton, an experienced photographer, journalist and blogger who has written for Londonist among others hosting a session on how to make your creative passion a source of profit and adventure (6pm – 7pm, Theatre Utopia, 8th February).
We also have Jason Ludwig hosting a similar session, titled (by Jack Oughton, by way of introduction) “how to kick people in the face and get paid for it”. Jason is a teacher of Wing Chun, a close combat martial art form and also works in media, film and music on and off stage and will be keen to take questions on any aspect of his career for those interested in pursuing similar paths.
We have a number of one to one drop-ins taking place where creatives can tackle some of the more sensitive subjects around their business. Finance, admin, intellectual property and so forth. We have the team from Newable Loans in to provide information on loans and other funding options which may be available to you. The team is also happy to cast an eye over your business plan and financial projections if you are at that stage.
We have a bunch of workshops in the pipeline including one on the 1st Feb with Aspectus PR, the UK’s fastest growing communications agency. Their head of tech and one of the senior creatives will be on hand to deliver a quickfire workshop for creative businesses and entrepreneurs.
With events taking place at venues across Croydon throughout February, and more events being added daily, we would love to showcase your creative contributions. Please get involved.
